Dr. Mark Zawadsky's mission is to provide personalized, high-quality care with most advanced and safest techniques available today:
As a specialist in the treatment of joint pain due to hip arthritis and knee arthritis which can lead to the need for hip replacement or knee replacement surgery, I am committed to providing the latest techniques available to improve your mobility and return you to the active lifestyle that you desire. I am Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Fellowship trained in hip and knee replacement surgery. I graduated from Princeton University, received my medical training at Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons, and then specialized in adult reconstructive surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, which is rated as the top orthopedic hospital in the country.
One of the exciting techniques that I offer for the treatment of a painful hip joint is the minimally invasive Direct Anterior Approach total hip replacement. This is a less invasive way of performing a total hip replacement which may be needed if your hip pain becomes severe. I have had longstanding experience with minimally invasive surgery and became interested in the anterior approach total hip replacement several years ago. After extensive training and study, I adopted this innovative approach with the goal of studying the actual effectiveness of the procedure. This surgical advancement is truly a muscle sparing approach which does not require the cutting or detachment of muscles from the bone, which other techniques such as the posterior approach total hip require. With the anterior approach my research has found that patients recover more quickly, have less pain, require fewer blood transfusions, leave the hospital sooner, and are significantly more mobile in the early post-operative time period. There are no "hip precautions" on movement which are required after surgery with the other approaches. My study results have provided confirming scientific data that this innovative approach is truly a significant advancement in the field of total hip replacement surgery and is being published in The Journal of Arthroplasty, a leading scientific publication for orthopaedic research. It has also confirmed that an experienced surgeon is important for a successful outcome with this technique.
As the Medical Director of the Bloodless Surgery Program at Georgetown, we are aggressively working on new techniques which reduce or eliminate the need for blood transfusions associated with total joint replacement surgery. Our transfusion rate is now only 2% for total hip replacement or total knee replacement surgery.
We are also researching advanced techniques in pain relief for our patients. We have developed pain management protocols that have greatly reduced the amount of pain experienced during total hip or total knee replacement surgery, which helps to speed your return to a comfortable and active lifestyle.
